CONSERVATION PROJECT STAGES

DOCUMENTATION
original architect drawings and previous interventions

DIAGNOSIS
assesment of damage and factors of deterioration

CLEANING
identity of dirt and compatible cleaning materials and methods
desalination and biocide treatments, masonry drying process

The cleaning stage is crucial in succeeding stone restoration process.
In order to choose the proper materials, tools and process, we must
identify

and evaluate substrate condition, contamInation factors and dirt composition.
We have to consider the stone surface dirt and also interior contamination.

Cleaning Methods

Chemical
Cleaning process using solvents, detergents and specific agents for surface
and chemical absorbent treatments of contamination contained in the stone.
Using solvents for surface, is better to start testing from natural soft solvent
(like Citrosolv) and choose a different or more aggressive solvent if needed.
Absorbent treatments usually refer to masonry compress:
Arbocel + Ammonium Carbonate + EDTA or Sepiolite

Bio contamination is treated with BAC 50, ready to use or diluted w/Ethanol

Mechanical

Requires brushes, sponges, scalpels, vibrating tools and soft media blasting.

New tehnologies

Ultrasonic and laser instruments are successfuly used in critical applications

CONSOLIDATION
structure, building elements and surface

MORTARS

Hydraulic Lime

Lafarge NHL 3.5 medium strength hydraulic lime

Lafarge HL 5 high strength hydraulic lime

Mape Antique Structural ready to use cement-free premixed mortar

Mape Antique Injection ready to use cement-free premixed mortar

Limecrete MK 20 metakaolin enhanced lime concrete

MICROLIME

Penetrating dispersion of micronized calcium hydroxide in ethanol

CYCLODODECANE
Temporary substrate consolidant before cleaning and consolidation

Disappears by sublimation at room temp in continued exposure to air

ETHYL SILICATE
Penetrates substrate capillaries to build
glass-like silica gel structure

ACRYL 33

Aggregate fixation and additive to improve adhesion and flexibility

NANO ACRYL
Nano polymer used as consolidant of porous stone, plaster and stucco

PARALOID B 72

The solid grade thermoplastic EMA acrylic resin forms coherent films

GLASS FIBRE RODS

High density rods provide reinforcement strength and aging resistance

GLASGRID 150

Inovative glass fibre grid 40x40mm 150 g/m2 non corrosive alkali resistant
Bonds effectively with lime mortars to provide tensile strength 45 kN/m
